|Scrimshaw was the fine art of 19th century whalers. While on
voyages lasting upwards of two or three years, the sailors
would pass the time carving artistic designs and pictures into
pieces of whalebone. They would then polish their creations
and bring them home as gifts for loved ones.
Our scrimshaw is produced in much the same manner by a
local craftsman. His original design is then transferred to a
man-made material especially created to give the same look,
feel, and coloration of the original whalebone art. In this
manner, no whales, or any other animal, is harmed in the
process, (whaling is now illegal in the U. S., and much of the
world, as well).
