*Significant Feature~~  The first light at this location appeared in 1875 as a pole light. A
wooden tower replaced the pole light in 1877, but was lost with much of the town in the
great Alpena fire of 1888, (the keeper's house was saved, however). A pole light once
again was temporarily put in service until a new wooden tower could be constructed later
that year. The present tower was built in 1914 to replace the deteriorating wooden tower.
The city of Alpena is also home to the Annual Great Lakes Lighthouse Festival, held each
October.
